In Brazil, awakening the taste for reading and creating reading habits.
The EDP in Schools program was born in 2012, within EDP’s Institute, and intends to actively contribute towards the improvement of the learning process, performing actions with teachers and students in Brazilian public schools. Reading incentive has been one of their starting points.
To create more critical and responsible citizens
Education is one of the central focuses of the action held by EDP’s Institute. EDP in Schools program, aligned with the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), has worked towards the improvement of teaching within the institutions that have benefited from it.
It’s unequivocal that reading is important whilst guiding more critical and responsible citizens. Ever since they were launched, in 2012, the actions for reading incentives that integrate this program - largely substantiated with textbooks delivery and reading workshops -, have been crucial to awakening and feeding the taste for reading and creating reading habits in the lives of students.
In 2021, the textbooks that were delivered to students and teachers were: “Guardião da Cidade” (“Guardian of the City”), from Francine Machado, and “E se o ar acabar” (“What if the air runs out?”), from Bia Monteiro.
Besides the reading incentives, this program includes the following actions:
1 - School Kits Delivery, which has been revealed to be essential for the creation of learning conditions, with impacts on school performance;
2 - Teachers training, allowing those who teach to also have conditions to develop their skills;
3 - Art with Energy Contest, founded on the transformative power of art, mainly when inspired by reflections about pertinent subjects for society;
4 - Virtual Reality in Schools, partnered with Stanford University, using the potential positive impact of this tool as a motivator for school performance;
5 - Back to school post-pandemic Support, in 2020, namely through the delivery of sanitizer dispensers, infrared thermometers, and masks; besides holding informative webinars for students and teachers.
This program has significantly provided for good school performance from everyone involved, with reading and writing incentives and bringing awareness for the whole school community to the respect of human values and the strengthening of citizenship.
