Energy
We generate and supply green energy for all and work to inspire trust, being efficient.
More than 40 years ago we started as a utility company in Portugal and grew to become a global energy major and a leader in the energy transition. Today, we are organised into five regions: Iberia, Europe, North America, South America and Asia Pacific and have more than nine million energy customers in the regulated and liberalized market. Through time our purpose and commitment to the planet became stronger and sustainability became part of our DNA.
We know that to win the race against climate change, the world needs structural transformation. And we want to drive that transformation, using the power of wind, sun and water on a global scale to accelerate decarbonization, leaving no one behind.
Today, 98% of all energy we generate already comes from renewable sources. But we want to go further - by 2030 we will be all green. To accomplish this, we will keep relying on our innovation, our drive, our passion, and the energy of over 13.000 people at EDP.
We generate and supply green energy for all and work to inspire trust, being efficient.
We care for our people, the heart of our strategy, and for our clients, partners and communities.
We are committed to making a difference and work every day to lead the energy transition.
We assume the social and environmental responsibilities that result from our performance thus contributing towards the development of the regions in which we operate. We avoid specific greenhouse gas emissions with the energy we produce. We ensure the participatory, competent and honest governance of our business.
We associate conduct and professional rigour to enthusiasm and initiative, emphasizing teamwork. We promote the development of skills and merit. We believe that the balance between private and professional life is fundamental to success.
Our clients are at the center of what we do. We have been building our position as our customers' sustainability partners, by offering them the right solutions to support their energy transition journey, such as green energy, distributed solar generation and e-mobility.
We fulfill the commitments that we embraced in the presence of our shareholders. We are leaders due to our capacity of anticipating and implementing. We demand excellence in everything that we do.

We installed Portugal’s 1st wind farm, in Porto Santo, Madeira, and also the 1st wind farm on the mainland, in Sines. We set up the hydroelectric exploitation of Alto Lindoso, in rio Lima, with 630 MW – the one with the greatest installed capacity in Portugal.
In 2000, we entered the electric sector in Brazil through the acquisition of CERJ, Bandeirante Energia e Escelsa. During the same period, we also entered the electricity and gas markets in Spain, through the acquisition of both Naturgas Distribuición and Hidrocantábrico.
We became the world’s 4th largest wind energy company in 2007, as we entered the American market through the acquisition of Horizon Wind Energy. Since then we’ve expanded to more than 20 new markets, focusing on renewable energy sources. Recently we’ve acquired Viesgo’s renewable business in Spain and Sunseap in Southeast Asia, reinforcing our commitment to promote renewable energy on a global scale.
To accelerate the energy transition, EDP increased its focus in delivering best in class innovative energy services to our clients, within the scope of distributed solar, storage, energy efficiency and e-mobility. Amongst other projects we launched WindFloat in 2020, the first floating wind farm in continental Europe. Additionally, we continuously invest in new and disruptive technologies that will help accelerate the planets’ decarbonization, such as green hydrogen. As a recognition for being one of the most sustainable utilities in the world, we also integrated the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
We have set the commitment to be coal-free by 2025 and use the power of wind, sun and water to be “All green” by 2030. To make this vision a reality, we will invest €24 billion in the energy transition.
