EDP in surfing

The wave of the future is in our hands

Water was one of the first elements to mark EDP's history through hydroelectric production several decades ago in Portugal, Spain, and Brazil. We have supported surfing and the growth of the sport since 2011, maintaining common values and a shared passion for the ocean and nature.

Over these years, we have developed a distinctive and highly relevant positioning in surfing, focusing on competition, training, and social responsibility.

EDP Surf for Tomorrow Team

An intensive training and ambition program

Developed in collaboration with leading partners and with a strong international component, the EDP Surf for Tomorrow team project reflects our commitment to future generations, promoting a healthy lifestyle and sustainability, and the preservation of the planet.

This high-competition program, designed to place a group of promising athletes at the highest level of world surfing, is now in its fourth edition, with a team composed of six Portuguese and Spanish surfers. In 2024, Afonso Faria, an adaptive surfing athlete, joined the team, making it more inclusive.

This team is trained and guided by the former World Tour duo, José Seabra and Tiago “Saca” Pires, who, through a demanding training and mentoring program, provide the necessary conditions for the athletes to prepare to compete in international circuits, taking Iberian surfing further.

Afonso Faria

Afonso has always been an athlete. At the age of 16, he was already a surfer and kart racer, an age at which he suffered an accident that resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite the difficulties, he found a new passion in adaptive surfing and a reason to continue competing.

Adaptive surfing restored his joy for life and motivated him to set a new goal: to make surfing his profession and win the World Championship. For this, he relies on the support of a dedicated team both on land and in the water.

To date, he has achieved 3rd place in the European Adaptive Surfing Championship and 14th in the World Championship in California in 2023.

Annette Etxabarri

Although she is already a champion in her own right, Annette's journey is just beginning. Her personality has shaped her surfing to be explosive and powerful, while we witness spectacular moments of fluidity, risk, and determination.

Annette represents the energy to continue building better horizons for the future.

Guilherme Ribeiro

Born and raised in the vibrant coastal town of Costa da Caparica, Gui's deep connection with the ocean began at a young age. Known for his strategic approach to competition and his unwavering commitment to excellence, Gui is a brilliant example for aspiring surfers worldwide. We see in him a surfer whose intelligence, professionalism, and passion drive him to new heights in and out of the water.

His journey to the upper echelons of professional surfing reached a monumental milestone with his qualification for the prestigious Challenger Series.

Hans Odriozola

Hans is proof that when talent meets determination, great things can happen.

Born and raised in the Basque Country, Hans's love for the ocean began very early. At just 16, he surprised the surfing world by winning the ISA World Junior Championship. His exceptional talent, combined with unwavering focus, led him to victory against experienced competitors.

Jaime Veselko

Jaime's natural talent, combined with a voracious drive to improve, positions him as one of the most promising talents in the surfing world. From the tubular waves of Carcavelos, Jaime has traveled the world, shaping his surfing to face the best surfers globally.

Kai Odriozola

Kai is known for his tenacity and courage in surfing, whether battling adverse conditions or executing complex maneuvers. This surfer approaches each competition with a warrior mentality. His relentless desire to improve and surpass limits distinguishes him, and achieving his qualification for the 2024 Challenger Series while pursuing a degree in engineering is proof of this.

EDP Open Sessions

The EDP Open Sessions, held from northern to southern Portugal, give children and young people from underprivileged institutions the opportunity to experience surfing. This contact with the sport fosters concern for the oceans and respect for nature in the younger generations.

This project involves the young surfers from the EDP Surf for Tomorrow team, inspiring participating children for a better future. It is also an opportunity for the team to experience and recognize the importance of social impact projects and their contribution to communities, a crucial factor in their personal and professional development as surfers.
